Buster Keaton: Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928)

This programme is held in Hungarian.

In the summer of 2026, our open-air live-music film screenings will continue, this time again with a justly popular classic, the 1928 burlesque Steamboat Bill, Jr.. Co-directed by and starring one of the most important creators of the silent film era, Buster Keaton, this comedy presents the broadest array of uproarious visual gags and stunt performances that often literally demand death-defying courage, while remaining light and entertaining throughout. The film will once again be accompanied by the joint improvisation of three exceptionally versatile personalities – Edina Mókus Szirtes, Jenő Lisztes, and Adonisz Fábry – so we can be sure that, in terms of ingenuity and virtuosity, the musical accompaniment will be in perfect harmony with the images on screen.

Vocalist and violinist Edina Szirtes began studying music at the age of five. She first appeared before the public with her own band in 2005 at the Budapest Fringe Festival, where she won a special prize. She has composed music for numerous theatre and dance productions, among which the performances of the Székesfehérvár Theatre, the Szeged Contemporary Ballet, the Recirquel Company, and the Operetta Theatre stand out. Her work has been recognised, among others, with the Artisjus Award, the Fonogram Award, and the Best Film Score Composer of the Year Award. She has released thirteen solo albums and performs continuously as a member of various ensembles. Cimbalom player Jenő Lisztes was born in Budapest in 1986. He began learning classical cimbalom at the age of four, first as a student of Ágnes Szakály, then of Jenő Sörös, and at twelve he won the Aladár Rácz Cimbalom Competition. He received his diploma in 2010 from the Liszt Academy of Music, majoring in classical cimbalom. From the outset his musical interests have been very wide-ranging, so in addition to participating in a number of classical and Gypsy music projects, he also feels at home in the realms of jazz and improvisation, and became known, among other things, as a member of Roby Lakatos’s band. Adonisz Fábry was born in Budapest in 2000. He began playing drums before the age of ten at the Martonvásár School of Arts, and he also spent a year as a student at the Snétberger Center for Musical Talent. Since 2012 he has also been playing the piano alongside drums, and is training himself in both classical and jazz genres. His talent and excellent improvisational skills soon became evident: at the 2nd National Jazz Competition he won the title of Best Drummer, and in 2023 he received the Louis Armstrong Award from the Hungarian Jazz Association for the best jazz musician under thirty.
