Born in Budapest in 1948, Gyula Bill Deák is perhaps the most emblematic singer of the Hungarian blues, often referred to as the "Hungarian blues king".
He started out in the band Sztár in Kőbánya, and the first serious group he sang in was Syrius. Until 1979, he appeared as a frequent guest singer with the Hobo Blues Band, and later became a permanent member of the band. In 1981, he also appeared in the film The Bald Dog. In 1983, he became nationally known for his role as the Torda Táltos in the Levente Szörényi-János Bródy rock opera Stephen the King. Later he also appeared in the musicals Here to Live, Here to Die, John the Baptist and Jesus Christ Superstar. His solo career began in 1983 with his first album, Bad Blood, and in 1985 he left the Hobo Blues Band. With Sándor Bencsik, he founded Bill and the Box Company, and in 1987 he became the frontman of the Deák Bill Blues Band. In 1984, he had the opportunity to perform with Chuck Berry, one of the founders of rock & roll, who said of Captain Bill: "He's the blackest-voiced white singer I've ever heard." The singer, who has won numerous awards, still performs regularly.
