SOLD-OUT - World Village – Musical Open University: Lamine Siskora (SEN)
The subject of this episode of Balázs Weyer’s World Village series is one of the defining instruments of Africa’s musical past and present: the kora. Also known as the African harp, the instrument is a key element of West African symbol culture, conveying in and of itself the region’s history, social structure, dynastic musical caste system and a great deal of history. Helping us gain familiarity with the instrument at the presentation will be Senegalese kora-player Lamine Siskora. It is thought that the Jeli people who play the kora have belonged to the same dynasties since the 13th century. Lamine Siskora himself belongs to the 42nd generation of the Sissoko kora dynasty, who also make their own instruments. This means we can learn about the entire story: how a calabash can be made from a pumpkin, how many years the strict apprenticeship lasts, how the instrument has survived almost a thousand years unchanged, and how it became a trend in world music at the turn of the millennium.
This program is held in Hungarian.
