Azu Tiwaline (TUN) | Nuri (TUN)

From time to time, the House of Music shares its curating work with individual artists. The host of the next Curation Weekend is the flautist, saxophonist, producer and DJ (Zakhorov) Fanni Zahár, a well-known musician of her generation, and a member and contributor to countless groups both at home and abroad. An artist at home in a wide range of genres, Zahár has compiled two events for her Curation Weekend on consecutive days on the cusp of winter and spring: an evening featuring a double-act performance and a concert with a range of performers.

The first, on Friday night, will feature the electronic music from the Maghreb region from two internationally acclaimed Tunisian performers. Azu Tiwaline makes rhythm-centred hypnotic and mystical music, one key element of which is its connections: tradition and club culture, past and present, east and west. Building bridges is also central to the music of Nuri – who hides his face behind braids – as he combines deep bass and organic percussion with polyrhythmic grooves and pays homage to Tunisia’s African roots with his songs.

“I have followed the work of both Azu and Nuri for a long time. I think their sounds are extremely innovative and unique, a kind of encounter between eastern traditions and western club culture.”

Azu Tiwaline and Nuri are well on their way to giving the musical style they represent a distinct name. Taking their own musical customs as a base, the pair blends these traditions with electronic music in a distinctive and innovative fashion. Both artists are focused on percussion elements that might be seen as their own interpretation of western club culture. Each of their sounds feature dub and psychedelia, while the club influence comes from UK bass and the typically faster-paced music of that world. The pair both work with samples of traditional instruments, self-recorded ambience and atmospheres, and use synthesizers and drum machines to create a completely new sound that has not yet spread widely either on the European club scene or in world music circles. Be among the first to discover this captivating dance music, performed in Hungary for the very first time!
