The Doppelmond Sogetsusha ensemble dedicates its work to the performance of the traditional Japanese chamber music formation, sankyoku. The ensemble’s repertoire is diverse, ranging from traditional works through contemporary music to new pieces by composers living in different parts of the world. At their concert we can encounter traditional Japanese instruments and immerse ourselves in spiritual music.

The traditional Japanese instruments that took on their current form in the 16th–17th centuries – the shamisen, a plucked long‑necked lute; the koto, a half‑tube zither; and the shakuhachi, a bamboo flute – all have a long and deeply rooted history. Their sound is closely connected to Japan’s musical tradition, which carries both spiritual and cultural meanings. These instruments not only preserve tradition, but also open up new creative horizons. By combining traditional sounds with the innovative approach of contemporary composers, our aim is to present the full richness and potential of this unique musical world to international audiences as well. On this musical journey, the audience is guided by Mieko Miyazaki, the shamisen artist living in Lyon, Naoko Kikuchi, the renowned koto player based in Frankfurt, and the talented Japanese shakuhachi player Reison Kuroda, together with Tomoya Yokokawa, the leader of the Doppelmond ensemble.

The ensemble was founded in 2022 under the artistic direction of Tomoya Yokokawa. Since then, they have carried out numerous projects, including European tours and world premieres. The ensemble also takes an active part in organizing workshops and educational programs aimed at conveying deeper and more nuanced knowledge of Japanese culture in Europe.
