This programme is held in Hungarian.

Today’s music is rarely just of today. Composers are connected in a thousand ways – consciously and instinctively, directly or indirectly – to both older and newer music. These musical connections are especially significant in the oeuvre of György Kurtág: through the rich and deliberate use of references, hommages and historical reflections, the creative process traverses a wide spectrum of music history.

Kurtágiána joins the series celebrating György Kurtág’s 100th birthday with a special experience that presents the Master’s oeuvre as a living, continuously evolving dialogue. At the evening of the MIKAMO Central European Chamber Orchestra, Kurtág’s music sounds in the context of historical references and contemporary reflections: starting from works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Robert Schumann, the compositions of several generations of composers enter into dialogue with each other.

The first part of the concert takes place in various spaces of the House of Hungarian Music. There, aphoristically shaped pieces by J. S. Bach, Schumann and Máté Balogh prepare the listener for the later, more expansive works. The first part converges in the foyer with the first movement of Kurtág’s work Bref messages, which acts as a junction, bringing together the previously separate musical experiences.

After the interval, the evening continues in the Concert Hall. Here, movements II–IV of Kurtág’s Bref messages unfold in a more concentrated listening situation, yet in an unusual concert format, followed by the performance of Hommage à R. Sch., which condenses his personal and musical connection to the figure of Schumann into an aphoristic form.

In the second half of the program, the broader dimension of the Kurtág universe emerges through works by contemporary composers. Marco Stroppa’s piece entitled life… until the end of time pays tribute to János Pilinszky, Judit Varga’s Zankend – Stille, stumm, still honors Márta Kurtág, while Nina Šenk’s composition Baca II, in its handling of material and method of construction, reflects on Kurtág’s way of thinking while at the same time providing a counterpoint to its character. The evening closes with the performance of Ivan Buffa’s new composition Earthpulse, written in honor of György Kurtág.

Kurtágiána is a continuation of MIKAMO’s long-term, discursive concert approach. The concert invites the audience to hear Kurtág’s music as a process in motion in both space and time: where the traditions of the past, the creative reflections of the present, and the personal paths of reception are closely intertwined.

The concert takes place as part of the Kurtág100 program series, organized by the Budapest Music Center and the Sonus Foundation, with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung.

The creation of Ivan Buffa’s piece was supported by the Slovak Arts Council.

On György Kurtág's 100th birthday, we are presenting the latest Hangdóm film, Kurtág-univerzum (Kurtág Universe), in honor of the composer, in which György Kurtág's abstract mood sketches come to life to the sounds of the cycle Zwiegespräch, composed with his son, György Kurtág Jr. in the special space of the House of Music. The 15-minute Sound Dome film Kurtág-univerzum, produced by the Budapest Music Center as part of the Kurtág 100 program series, will remain available for viewing among the Hangdóm 360 cinema screenings after the premiere.

The content was created by BMC and its partner, the Paul Sacher Stiftung.
