This programme is held in Hungarian.

Kurtágiána is a concert celebrating György Kurtág’s 100th birthday, which presents his oeuvre not as a closed legacy, but as a living, continuously evolving dialogue. At the evening of the MIKAMO Central European Chamber Orchestra, Kurtág’s music is heard in the context of historical references and contemporary reflections: starting from the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Robert Schumann, the compositions of several generations of composers enter into relationship with one another.

The first part of the concert takes place in various spaces of the House of Music. Moving from station to station, the audience can follow the musical-intellectual arc that gradually builds up the Kurtág universe. The movements of Robert Schumann’s Kreisleriana, in Csaba Ajtony’s transcription, evoke the introspective, fragmented way of thinking of Romanticism, while Kurtág’s Bach transcription (Actus Tragicus) is heard as a condensed imprint of his personal relationship to the tradition of music history. Selected movements from Kurtág’s cycle Játékok (Games), in Olivier Cuendet’s arrangement, highlight the playfulness of musical gesture, its experimental nature and didactic sensitivity, while Máté Balogh’s work Apparatus fits into this spatial dramaturgy as a contemporary counterpoint. The first part converges in the atrium with the first movement of Kurtág’s Brefs messages, which, as a node, brings together the previously separate musical experiences.

After the intermission, the evening continues in the Concert Hall. Here, movements II–IV of Brefs messages unfold in a more focused listening situation, yet in an unusual concert format, followed by the performance of Hommage à R. Sch., which condenses his personal and musical relationship to the figure of Schumann into an aphoristic form. In the second half of the program, works by contemporary composers further explore the impact and survival of Kurtág’s musical language. Marco Stroppa’s piece life… fogytiglan forms an imaginary dialogue between a poet and a philosopher, Judit Varga’s Zankend – Stille, stumm, still pays tribute to György and Márta Kurtág, while Nina Šenk’s composition Baca II, in its handling of material and method of construction, reflects on Kurtág’s way of thinking, while at the same time counterpointing its character. The evening concludes with the performance of Ivan Buffa’s new composition, Earthpulse.

The concert is part of the Kurtág100 series, organized by the Budapest Music Center and the Sonus Foundation, with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung.

On György Kurtág's 100th birthday, we are presenting the latest Hangdóm film, Kurtág-univerzum (Kurtág Universe), in honor of the composer, in which György Kurtág's abstract mood sketches come to life to the sounds of the cycle Zwiegespräch, composed with his son, György Kurtág Jr. in the special space of the House of Music. The 15-minute Sound Dome film Kurtág-univerzum, produced by the Budapest Music Center as part of the Kurtág 100 program series, will remain available for viewing among the Hangdóm 360 cinema screenings after the premiere.
