Musician\'s Cafe Artúr Berki

This programme is held in Hungarian.

Whether it is the invigorating melodies of gypsy string orchestras or the moving tunes of lounge pianists, the restaurants, pubs, and cafés of Hungarian cities have always been infused with music. The Musicians' Café series, starting at the café of the House of  Music, takes the audience into the world of hospitality musicians once a month. During our café evenings, the atmosphere of the restaurants from the era of Gyula Krúdy, the time of celebrities carousing with bands like Pál Jávor and Antal Páger, or the decadent gentry, comes to life. The series aims to draw attention to one of our most important Hungarikums, the café gypsy music, which is increasingly being marginalized these days. This time, Berki Artúr's evening showcases the café music of lounge pianists as an example.

Guests will be offered a welcome drink and, in keeping with the spirit of the Musicians' Café series, dinner and drinks will be available at the concert venue. Artúr Berki started his musical career under the influence of his father, who worked as a bar pianist in Kazincbarcika. He started out in the classical music direction, but over time he also became interested in other genres. He played in Kurhauses and restaurants and then founded the Váradi Roma Café with his brother. During his career, he gave numerous concerts and recorded six double platinum records with his orchestra. In 2012, he won the National Bar Pianist Competition, a significant milestone in his career. He was a regular at the Boscolo Hotel and the New York Café, where he played for three years. He currently plays at the Mourning Shepherd six times a week, and at midday he performs at the Fakanal Restaurant in a cimbalom-piano violin line-up. He is a regular at the most prestigious hotels and exclusive events. He believes that good music finds its way to audiences everywhere and that there can be no progress without constant renewal.

The aim of the series is to draw attention to one of the most important parts of Hungarian heritage, the Roma music of the cafés, which sadly is increasingly neglected nowadays.
