Musician's Café: József Hankó & His Band
Musician's Café: József Hankó & His Band
This programme is held in Hungarian.
Whether in the form of the blood-quickening melodies of Gypsy string bands or the emotive tunes played by bar pianists, music has always filled the restaurants, pubs and coffee houses of Hungarian cities. The Musicians’ Café series, which starts its journey in the House of Music Hungary’s very own café, each month guides the audience through the world of musicians engaged in the hospitality industry. Our coffee house evenings bring to life the atmosphere of restaurants from the era of Gyula Krúdy, Pál Jávor, Antal Páger and celebrities carousing with the stars, and a decadent gentry.
The aim of the series is to highlight one of our most important and uniquely Hungarian traditions, but one that is sadly fading: Gypsy café music. On this occasion, it will be a concert by József Hankó that will serve as the example of this café music. The price of admission includes a welcome drink, and, true to the spirit of the Musicians’ Café series, guests will also be able to enjoy dinner and beverages at the concert venue.
The aim of the series is to draw attention to one of the most important parts of Hungarian heritage, the Roma music of the cafés, which sadly is increasingly neglected nowadays.
Whether it is the stirring melodies of stringed Roma bands or the moving melodies of bar pianists, music has always permeated the restaurants, pubs and cafés of Hungarian towns. Once a month, the Musicians’ Café series, launched in the café at the House of Music Hungary, takes its audience into the world of visiting musicians. During our café evenings, we bring to life the restaurant atmosphere of the Gyula Krúdy era, celebrities like Pál Jávor and Antal Páger, who partied with the bands, or decadent jazz musicians. The aim of the series is to draw attention to one of our most important Hungarian heritage items: café Roma music, which is sadly being neglected increasingly.
