The View & Hayden Chisholm (UK-NZL-NOR)
In the first half of its opening year in 2022, the House of Music presented two outstanding chamber jazz concerts: in February, New Zealand's Hayden Chisholm (solo), followed in May by British drummer Phelan Burgoyne, then living in Italy, with his new trio. Unsurprisingly, the two musicians, renowned for their delicate, breathable, sophisticated music, found each other and are now returning to our concert hall as a trio.
Chisholm plays meditative music on the sruti box, an Indian instrument somewhat similar to the harmonium with a drone-like sound, as well as on the saxophone. Among his numerous collaborative albums, there is one on which he plays with Laki Liebezeit, the drummer of the legendary krautrock band Can. Burgoyne added to his list of projects and formations when, after eight years of collaboration, he released a joint album in 2024 with Alex Ventling, an up-and-coming pianist who is also half New Zealand (half Swiss). Their album, The View, explores the intimate but rich relationship between drums and piano, opening the door to a variety of colors and textures—improvisations and discoveries in friendly harmony. This duo formation and Chisholm have found each other and are embarking on a joint tour, which fortunately also includes the House of Music. A drum-piano-saxophone trio, chamber jazz, meditative moments, and beautiful music await us.
