Bach x Pilinszky: Crossroads of Music and Literrature

This programme is held in Hungarian.

Truly surprising things are born when two seemingly separate worlds meet. In the production of Márk Süveg (Saiid) and Márton Wunderlich, we can witness exactly such a reaction: Johann Sebastian Bach’s works for solo violin and János Pilinszky’s poems appear on the same stage, reinforcing each other, and, complemented by Saiid’s own texts, come together into a shared story. The performance focuses not only on the works presented but also on the inner world of the performers, since the fragments of verse and melody will sound as a unified dramaturgical whole (and even without dispensing with improvisation). In this way, Saiid’s voice and Márton Wunderlich’s violin playing together provide an imprint of the two artists’ possible states of mind.

Introduction of the performers:

Márton Wunderlich
“I am 24 years old, a violinist. A recent graduate, you might say. Since September 2024 I have been a first violinist of the Hungarian National Philharmonic. I have been writing poems since I was 16, and since my high school years I have had a particular interest in history. My musical career was far from pre-planned: I applied to the classical violin performance program at the Liszt Academy of Music from the math-physics track at the Leőwey Klára High School in Pécs.
Above all, I consider important that complex value we call humanity, which is born from the sum of our knowledge and our personality. And an excellent aid to this is art and catharsis, as the feeling that shapes the human soul best. I love catharsis also because it makes this otherwise terribly hurried world timeless. This is the feeling I try to evoke every time I step onto the stage: this timelessness.”

Márk Süveg
“Still on the near side of fifty, but not for long. I have two daughters and a wonderful wife, who fill me with a much deeper happiness and a greater pride than the fact that my musical career started before my colleague’s life did, that the profession generally chooses us as the most important Hungarian rap act with Akkezdet Phiai, that we have won numerous awards at music video and film festivals, that I am a two-time Hungarian Slam Poetry Champion, or that at 32 I became a school-leaving exam topic – precisely at my colleague’s high school in Pécs. But from time to time I am happy to read a few beautiful poems to the sound of the violin. Here’s the occasion.”
